Dr. Zhi-cheng Xiao is currently a professor in Monash University, who has both extensive academia and industrial experiences. He was awarded a Doctor of Natural Science Degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, in 1996. He was also trained in Harbin Medical University, University of Science and Technology of China and Beijing Medical University as both a medical and Ph.D student. Vadlakonda Lakshmipathi has completed his PhD in 1982 from Kakatiya University, India. He has been the faculty of Kakatiya University from 1971 to 2006 (till his retirement) and after retirement he served as a Visiting Professor, University of Hyderabad a consultant scientist at Cell work Bangalore guest professor at NIPER Hyderabad and as adjunct professor at CRRAO (AIMS). He has 45 years of teaching experience, mainly in all areas of Cell Biology, Enzymology and Metabolic regulation. His focus after retirement for the past years is on cell signaling in cancer and diabetes.

Cell Biology

A Chapel for 25 years, he has been developing gene and cell therapy using non-human primates, immune-tolerant mice and rats to protect against the side effects of radiation. He collaborates with clinicians to develop strategies for treatment of patients after radiotherapy overexposures. He has participated in the first establishment of proof of concept of the therapeutic efficacy of Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of hematopoietic deficit, radiodermatitis and over dosages of radiotherapy. He has contributed to the first reported correction of deficient hematopoiesis in patients (graft failure and aplastic anemia) thanks to intravenous injection of MSCs restoring the bone marrow microenvironment, mandatory to sustain hematopoiesis after total body irradiation. He is scientific investigator of Clinical phase II trial evaluating the efficacy of systemic MSC injections for the treatment of severe and chronic radiotherapy-induced abdomino-pelvic complications refractory to standard therapy (NCT02814864Hirsch Index 29)
